Memory Quilt Series No 1 - Dale Head Farm

Computer problems have held me up from posting until
today, but here is No 1 in my series.
You have had glimpses of this one some time ago but now I have a
finished quilt, with a story,  those who like to know the story behind
a quilt then please read on.

Dale Head Farm
High Peak
Derbyshire

As a youngster between the ages of 4yrs and 10 years, I spent
many happy holidays with Mum on a relative's farm in Derbyshire, England.
Dad's cousin (known as Aunty Alice to me) and her husband had the farm with a herd of
dairy cows - Friesians - and a decent sized flock of sheep.

These holidays were some of the happiest times of my younger years.
The marriage of my Mum and Dad was difficult and
time spent on the farm were balm for the soul of a little girl.
The journey involved a train ride from our village in Lancashire, another
train from Manchester to Buxton followed by a ride on  the one bus of the day
which would take us up on to the High Peak and drop us off at the
top of the long lane to the farm, then a long walk!

I would be up in the morning at 5.00am to help with milking, no machines
then just a three legged milking stool, a pretty large pail clasped between the knees - a bit
tricky for a little girl - and knowing how
to get the milk going! How I loved that part of the day. Anyone who
hasn't had the chance to perch on a stool in the shippen (cowshed), pail between knees and
head resting up against the flank of a warm, steaming cow doesn't know what they are missing.
I also learnt how to miss the odd forward back leg kick, mostly anyway but there was
the odd accident with the pail of milk.

Arriving at lambing time was equally enjoyable, I would do the rounds with
Uncle Bob when necessary to check if any sheep were in trouble, if that was the case,
especially if twins were on the way, I would keep the sheep steady and
comforted on the ground while he delivered. What an amazing experience.

I learnt how to drive the tractor - an old photo below from about 1954

not very clear but thanks to good old iPhone it's a reasonable
copy from one in the photograph album.

The old black iron stove in the kitchen/living room warmed us, fed us
and had a copper kettle nearly always boiling hot ready for a drink.
The kettle had been used in my Dad's younger days by his Mum. I never knew my
grandma, she died when Dad was 15 yrs old. That old kettle, which by then was
almost totally black, sits now on a cupboard in our hallway, cleaned by my Aunt
when they left the farm. I like that I have something from my Grandma.

There were a couple of cosy chairs and two lovely oak carved settles - similar to
a church pew - along the walls. Luckily a few cushions were available for use, sitting without that padding
was pretty hard!
The huge wooden table in the centre of the room was permanently
covered in a homely cotton cloth, letters were written, freshly picked garden peas
shelled into a bowl, dough mixed for bread, butter made, batter for baking, all were
carried out on this table. And always a fresh jug of milk. sitting there - no refrigerator,
no electricity.

There was another smaller  room which had a piano sitting there, I spent hours
on that old thing, I couldn't read music then but I could play one or two tunes
by ear. For some reason The Minstrel Boy was constantly being hammered
out on the keys.

How I loved my Aunty Alice, she had a permanent sinus problem, very curly and
wiry hair and a wonderful happy smile. She always wore lovely old flowered wrap around aprons
which covered front and back, I wonder if that's where my love
of bright fabric comes from, hence the use of the bright flowered
KF Collective fabrics in the quilt, reminiscent also of the lovely
wild flowers in the meadows of the farm.

I close my eyes and I am back there again.
Happy Days

Now,  a couple more quilt photos.
Here is my favourite piece of fabric in this quilt, my last little bit of
an old KF.

You can see the lovely wavy quilting by
and the psychedelic backing fabric!

I used another KF fabric for the binding, I thought it blended in with
the main fabric pretty well.

Cotton batting from Leeanne, also the backing fabric.
Original pattern by Judy Newman using pastel fabric - of course
I had to go bright!
Measuring 66" x 78"

Needless to say this is a keeper!!!

Two more quilts should be bound by my next post, not memory quilts so
the post will be considerably shorter!

Enjoy the rest of your week and happy quilting.

Snippets on Sunday

We're creeping ever closer to Christmas, how could the past 12 months have
moved along so very quickly!

First up before quilty photos see below. On the grocery shopping list
was a bottle of a good, rich red wine for my pasta dish for the evening meal.
As soon as I spotted this one on the shelf,  I knew it had to come home with me!
A welcome addition to our meal.

I've been able to spend some time this week on my quilting,
first on my list was checking for stray threads
on two quilts ready to be sent off next week
for quilting.

First, with borders added, is Memory Quilt and you can see it was
a windy day. The story behind this quilt I will share in the New Year
when it's been quilted.

 A blip with the watermark, a practically non-existent 'z'.

Second quilt was made quite some time ago, around three years I think, from
Quilts in Morocco by Kaffe Fassett.

Blue Heaven

I thought the hydrangeas were a good match.

A little more progress made with Mardi Gras

just pinned on the wall at the moment, 19 more blocks to make. I'll try different
settings when they're all finished. I'm loving playing
with strips and strings and as I have heaps I can see more string/strip quilts
in my future.

Something new now - I'm cutting solid 9" squares,
the pattern is inspired by Sujata Shah and her
superb book Cultural Fusion Quilts.
More squares to be cut this week. This is another in the
Memory Quilt category.

Time to go, a little time to spend on a few hexies and then
our two eldest grandchildren are coming for a meal with us.
Beatrice is the eldest at 19yrs and Charlie 17yrs.
Bea is training at a hair salon and Charlie heading off to
University in the New Year.
Doesn 't seem so long ago that we were sitting reading nursery rhymes
with them!!

Enjoy the coming week and hopefully not be too stressed
with preparations for Christmas.

Ready for the borders

Memory Quilt One is going to have
the borders sewn on, hopefully tomorrow
and then off to be quilted.

Remember this piece below from my earlier post?

Catastrophe - three strips sewn together, up on the design wall I see
that the centre section of the three had some of the strips bowing,
major unpick and no more of Aboriginal Dots fabric in Teal!
Off to the store - none of this particular
colour on the shelf so waiting to see if we can get a hold
of some early next week. Also we discovered that it is officially listed
as Charcoal.

Whilst I'm waiting I'm busy gathering
the fabrics together to make a quilt from the latest
KF book - Quilts in America.

Stonewall

This of course was based on a stone wall in the States, coming
from  the UK the dry stone walls there are quite different depending
on which county they're in. I'm from Lancashire and the colours there
are different to Derbyshire for example, so my quilt will
certainly not have as much blue as the one
in the photo above.

I will also be going with a different fabric for the sashing rather than
the one above.
Gathered as of today are a few below.
Most I have in my stash but some I had to buy in.

I like that KF suggests only making one block at a time rather
than thinking to cut all those HSTs at once, time to check
if I have the correct size die for my cutter!!

In the garden I love my day lilies, this one is a very prolific bloomer,
just a touch of lime green in the very centre.

All for now, happy quilting!

A little progress!

And it is truly only a little progress with the
Memory Quilt
from my post HERE
last month.

Hopping about like Long John Silver with his one crutch
makes it a teeny bit tricky to be on small step ladders
trying to pin a quilt on the design wall. However I did a
reasonable job, I think.

The very bottom row is just pinned on the wall, still needs to be sewn
to the pink strip but I decided a break was in order at that
point. Two side views, couldn't go far enough back to take
a full on photo. Just one more row to go at the bottom, a repeat of the first
row but different fabrics.

I'd forgotten there was a border to go on so more of the
KF  Dream fabric in Dark is on the way to me.

Coming out of my little studio I saw that John
had one of his old oil paint palettes upright on a shelf, I always
take a photo of these because of the stunning
mix of colour.

A scrap quilt in oils!

The garden is so overgrown right now, John is
carrying out an assault on the weeds and overgrown grass,
I'm hopping along taking photos.

The hydrangeas are just beginning to colour up so here's
a look at a couple of the flowers coming out on the
hydrangeas down the drive, the bushes are
huge this year. Sadly once the sun beats down in Summer
the blooms wilt like crazy, copious watering takes place then.

I'm sending wishes for a
Happy Thanksgiving
to all in the USA but there will be a tremendous
number of people for whom there will be no celebrations, only mourning,
following the horrific fires in California with loss of loved ones
and their homes.
I'm thinking particularly of the destruction of
Paradise right now. To see the sights we have on our
news here brings tears.

Back soon.

sew stitch snap SHARE #15

I'm snatching just a few minutes to write this post and then link
up with Linda and Julie. Link will be at the bottom of this post.

Unfortunately since my last post  two weeks ago
ill health has persisted, after more tests I'm hopeful that
I truly am improving!!

Progress had been made in two quilting areas, at least I think so.

Desert Rose was first up on my list for finishing with two more borders to add.
After looking at this on my design wall for two days
I made the decision to forget more borders

and basted it!
Board basting and using herringbone stitch - all ready to quilt.

A change of plan with my first Memory quilt, this was the planned
layout with large squares on point top row (just off the top I'm afraid)

with my change from the pattern to stars, then my small golden churn dash.
After this was on the wall for a few days I decided it wasn't doing anything for me,
somewhere along the way I had lost my way!!

So, back to following the original block patterns by Judy Newman.
much happier now.

Below are three blocks using fabrics I love.

Embroidered Leaf

Dream

Feathers
All teamed with KF Dream Dark.

In the midst of my problems poor Leila was attacked by
a neighbouring cat, two days at the emergency vet office
over the weekend, and today with our usual vet in surgery.
I'm feeling pretty down and sad right now, she's staying in there overnight and hopefully
home tomorrow.

I suspect barely any quilting will be done in the next few days,
I'll be wearing my nurse uniform!

Keep well and happy, enjoy your quilting and see you soon.

Hope you'll go along to visit
Linda at kokaquilts
and
Julie at justjulielou

Now I'm off to read almost one weeks worth of blog posts from you all.

Memory Quilts - Happy Days 1

A few things going on around here has meant
that quilting has been on the back burner, however,
this gave me time to really sit and think about my quilting.

I love making quilts that have a story, I've long thought about
a series of quilts on my childhood memories,
places and people who meant so very much to me.

The one in progress here is the first
Happy Days 1
the story I shall tell when the quilt is sewn together.

Above are the first two rows with strips separating, the
blocks in the second row are not yet sewn up, I've been
playing around to get them in an order which pleased me.

The third row is just beginning and those of you who read
my blog regularly will remember my stars begun for RSC 2016
but never completed!!

These are a perfect fit for my story, still a work in progress
so not a chocolate box photo shot

and the small square between the two stars
will be appliqued.

Apologies for the oversized letters, no time
left tonight to resize them.
I eventually have my camera in working order again but
now see I need to reduce the font size after having used the camera
set up on my iPad for a little while.

That's all from me for a few days, see you soon and have
lots of happy quilting time!
