Two or three years ago I made twelve blocks using the Rail Fence pattern
from Sujatha Shah's book,
Cultural Fusion Quilts.
I love this pattern, so quick and interesting but
the fabrics I chose were not my usual brights, they were
more subdued overall. so they ended up in my UFO drawer.
Daughter asked if I had a quilt she could use just to cover a
bed in her small office/guest room.
I have enough projects on the go at the moment so fell back
on this small top above, 16"finished blocks and 12 blocks in all.
Instead of making more blocks I decided on wide borders.
I hunted through yardage of my
fabrics for something to tie all these different colours together
but didn't find anything that worked, until I
picked up this Anna Maria Horner fabric below

and it was perfect, I'm busy cutting for
the borders now.
Thinking she might like two cushions for the bed I
went with my more usual colours for
the two blocks below
waiting to have the envelope backs made.
The grey check flannel was always a nightmare to get
straight on the wall but I have the cream flannel
in the laundry so just having to go with the uneven grid
for now.
When I collect my new glasses I think more sewing will be done,
I've been having problems with close work, reading, computer
and of course sewing. Off to the optometrist later this
afternoon.

Your flowers are so beautiful. Opticians, my visit is next Wednesday, distance glasses show a blur!!!Love the border fabric and pillow tops, wonderful to fond something and be able to give it that special finish.

Oh those hibiscus are beauties! Great idea to use that ufo. Very different way to set up a rail fence....yet it works!
How great that you found just the right home for your UFO. I really like those wonky rails. And that AMH print is perfect for the borders! Sounds like this one marinated for just the right amount of time :)

I made one of these quilt tops in bright batiks. I gave it as a comfort quilt, but I have about 7 blocks left over and have some batik strips that could do make more, but have not got around to it. I love yours even if the colors aren't your normal brights.

Your blocks look great and make up a nice quilt and pillows.
I rather like the muted rail fence blocks, but I also think adding that glorious fabric as a border will probably make it feel much more 'you'. Sounds like using this for your daughter is the perfect solution too.
It's nice to find a place for one of your lesser loved UFOs. The border fabric is perfect. You may be very sorry you offered this one to your daughter. Happy Stitching.
I agree with Kate - once you get that border on, the quilt is going to be hard to part with! 8)
Your rail fence is lovely. Your choices for solid fabrics to go with the prints are spot on. And I think I will join you in getting new glasses...I wear mine on top of my head more than on my face. I can't set them down or Buddy will grab them and run off with them.
How good that a discarded project has found a home! I agree with the others, the border will transform the quilt, and fun cushions to go with it too. Hope your eyes are sorted now, it's frustrating not being able to see and focus properly!
