Kaleidoscope 2 aka Helicopters

Mmmm, I was hoping to show a finished top to join the
Kaleidoscope of Butterflies link up, I've only completed the central
piece - and have a bit of a disaster on my hands.

You can probably see why in the photo below.

Two issues with this
a) my iron decided to spit out gunge on the cream fabric second row from bottom
b) the dark fabrics are showing through two layers of the cream by the seam lines,
in some cases.
I was extremely careful to trim away any excess knowing that it's so easy
to get a shadow effect, I should have used a heavier weight cream
fabric - lesson learned!

I am so cross with myself, I don't know whether I can bear to put
the border on! I guess I could quilt 1/4" away from the seam
which would hide any shadowing through.

My little companion cheered me up as we played in the garden

here she is against a backdrop of weeds and now just over one year old! Oops my
watermark has landed across her little white paws.

Off to join the link-up with

Have a happy weekend.

Maureen

Your quilt is looking beautiful, I hadn't noticed the shadowing until you pointed it out. Maybe if you use a cream batting it will help it blend in more and not stand out as a white one would.
Enjoy your long weekend.

Julie is right.....would not have noticed if you had not said something. And it is beautiful! Yes, add the border.....do not waste your effort. I think it is once quilted all problems will be noticed less.

I had to really scrutinize the photo to see what you are talking about. Once it is quilted and washed, the shadowing from the quilting will make the dark seam disappear in the texture. It is beautiful.

I had not noticed either!! We are so close to our quilts that I think what we perceive as bad errors are magnified in our own minds...that being said--your idea of quilting to hide shadowing is perfect--and this is a lovely piece--I wouldn't be discouraged at all...hugs, Julierose

I think it will be mostly unnoticeable when the quilt is finished and washed. Your bold colors are the attention grabbers, not the very subtle hardly noticeable problem.

I agree with everyone else - just carry on! It's going to be beautiful, and no one will ever see the shadowing.

Oh my! Your use of Kaffe spots is quite wonderful and I love the combination with your stripes. And Leila is looking lovely.

Border it, and once the batting and backing are there, maybe you will not see the darker pieces. I think I need new specs, as I can hardly see where they are. Black and white, perfect in the garden. She is a treat to look at.

Since your gorgeous scrappy stars are (literally) the stars of this quilt, they will shine bright against the cream no matter what. Anyone peering closely at this quilt will be admiring all your lovely Kaffe fabrics and how clever you were to put the polka dots in the center of each star.

If this quilt lived with ME, I'd have already dropped raspberry jam right onto one of the cream sections anyway. And I'd count myself very, very lucky to have such a beautiful quilt on my lap while eating toast :)

It's looking wonderful! I love the spots! I'm sure the shadowing will hardly be noticable once you start quilting. Would pressing it towards the darks help or is it too late to do that?

Golly, I think you are being a trifle too hard on yourself. Once this is batted up no one will ever know. I can't even see what you are worried about by your photos.
Puss cat looks a picture of health. Very sweet. Tuxedo cats always look so smart.

How frustrating for you! Like everyone else, I would happily border and quilt it, so I hope you can bring yourself to look past the shadowing. I think if you deliberately quilt along that line it should do a good job of disguising and your piecing is so, so pretty.

I know how disappointing it is when problems develop with your tops. It bothers you but like everyone else, I can't see it. I like their solutions to disguise the shadowing and hope you add the borders. This is a lovely top.

Thanks for linking with Kaleidoscope of Butterflies.

I think it's beautiful! I agree the cream batting will certainly help, I've had the same issues.
Fabulous work here as always,
Love your cat photo, I like Tuxedo cats too.

Un Lax Re Lax - this is a beautiful quilt top and once you put the quilting in no one will notice the minor flaws that you are pointing out. I can not see them online...take good care of yourself and love your self and your own efforts. Perfection is a miracle - we artists can noot manage it every time. Agnes Martin said something like that. xoxo

No, I do not see any problems either. There is so much contrast between the colours and the background that no one else will see any issues either. Carry on, Maureen, it looks great!

I don't see the issues from here! I just see inspiration for another Kaleidoscope quilt!

This is awesome!! Just quilt along the shadowing and it'll disappear. It's the colourful parts that attract your eye.
